On the occasion of International Women's Day, a "Success Stories from Our Female Academics" talk was held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 14:00 via Microsoft Teams, moderated by Prof. Dr. İlknur Kumkale, the Director of Keşan Yusuf Çapraz Applied Sciences College.
Female academics working at Keşan Yusuf Çapraz Applied Sciences College gathered online. After Prof. Dr. İlknur Kumkale shared information about the origins of International Women's Day, she asked the participants about their thoughts on "Being a Woman," "Success," and "Success Stories." The lecturers, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ebru Onurlubaş, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mübeyyen Tepe Küçükoğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aysun Atagan Çetin, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Betül Ayça, Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Ayşe Seden Özbek Püskül, Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Özge Ercebe, Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Nil Sirel Öztürk, Lecturer Dr. Nursel İşçimen, and Lecturer Dr. Tuba Elmas, enriched the discussion with their wonderful examples and success stories.
The common points that the speakers agreed on in the talk, which hosted students, alumni, and academics, were:
-
Women symbolize strength, patience, productivity, love, and life.
-
The "woman identity" brings various responsibilities as a child of a family, a working woman, a wife, and a mother, and balancing all these is key to happiness and success.
-
Success, meaning the ability to overcome challenges, can be achieved through effort and dedication in both academic and life fields, and every success is worth celebrating.
-
Hard work and success have no gender.
-
While the conditions for women may sometimes be more challenging compared to men in work and personal life, it is important for spouses to share life with an egalitarian approach and for male colleagues to create environments that do not negatively impact women.
-
Regarding gender equality, women seek the same rights, not to be the same as men, and should not face inequality in society simply because of their gender.
-
The importance of leaving beautiful marks on lives by thinking that men and women, as human beings, citizens, children, neighbors, colleagues, spouses, and mothers, are all interconnected was emphasized.
In this context, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's words should always be remembered: "Human society consists of two genders, women and men. Can we advance a part of this society while neglecting the other, so that the whole can progress? Is it possible for one half of a body to rise to the skies while the other half is grounded?"
